The connections on the mother board are different than those used for PATA drives. You need to find the manufacturer of your mother board and what model it is. Then go to the manufacturer's web site and read what they say. Virtually all mother boards made in the last several years have connections for SATA drives but you need to be sure. I have included a link which shows what the actual cable ends look like. The second link shows a mother board with both types of connectors labeled and circled. Good luck.

A normal (older style) hard disk uses an IDE cable which has a plug that is roughly 2 inches wide. You will usually find them sitting together on the board and there will often be another one which looks very similar sitting close by which is for the floppy A:\ drive. A SATA plug is much smaller, not even one inch (25mm) long and again, there is usually at least two on a motherboard. A normal IDE cable is usually a flat ribbon type cable and is also quite wide, whereas a SATA cable is quite thin - maybe 6 or 8mm wide.
If you open you case and get the model of the motherboard which is usually printed on it somewhere (although quite small) you could then go to the manufacturers website and see if it supports SATA.
Hope this helps.

If you have an older system board, Two years or older, then most likely you will not be ablae to use the SATA drive. The SATA drives do not use the IDE and power cables that we are used to. Now it is all in one thin cable that connects to the system board. Its a small connection like 3 or 4 wires. There is a specific connection on the hdd and the system board for this. The connection looks almost like the plug on your system board for audio connections. Like the one that comes from your cd/dvd player..

That's OK, if your motherboard has SATA ports then it's the only thing that SATA cable will plug into. If you do not have SATA ports then it's possible to get an adaptor card to put into a PCI slot to accommodate your SATA drive. Most of the latest motherboards have SATA ports. SATA cards are NOT expensive as others say, see link below for details. Good luck!

When was the baord built, if not in the last Year or so then No, it won't support a SATA connection, and No it would be Ultra ATA, or EIDE connection if its older than a year. You can by a sata control arm for your board if you have an open PCI slot, but they are expensive.

My first suggestion is: go back it and take a examine out to discover one with IDE or EIDE Then, in case you nonetheless confirm to keep it, be prepared to spend some money (purchase a IDE to SATA Multifunction Converter) and to waste a large type of time attempting to make it artwork (discover the driving force that works with the adapter and the burner)
