Be very careful with your back. Eat high protien foods and drink lots of water to help the healing process. If the injury is over 2 days old then ice won't help. Try heat and lay on your back and gently stretch the part that hurts. Do not overdo or you will reinjure yourself. Lift properly and try to keep your weight down. This is a difficult injury to self treat and will take time to heal. Be patient and don't rush things. And don't be afraid to ask your doc for medication and physical therapy.

go to a physical therapist, they know better techniques to help make your back stronger or If you cant afford that, get a book called "how to fix your own back". I did not like going to the chiro because I felt worst than I did before seeing them.

Chiropractors will prob make the pain worse! Everyone i know that goes to see a chiro always ends up having worse back problems as they always need to have their backs clicked back. So i would go to see your general DR, who may be able to refer you to someone better. My mother had his and she eventually had to have a spinal injection of something or other. Anyway the pain went away.

You could try massage therapy. Specifically neuromuscular therapy, it is used for pain management. If you can not afford it try offering barter services.
