The range has usually been from 10 to 12 with some exceptions at 8 and 9. Mensus is usually mid-teens and has been from 10 to 16. The entire process of puberty lasts from two to six years.
There are studies and incidental data to suggest that the puberty range is down shifting towards the 8-9 level from 10-12; a shift due to growth hormones in meat, early exposure to explicit sexual situations or material and other factors.
One study I have heard about, but have yet to locate, puts the downshift at three years. This could put onset of mensus at age 7! If so the world is in big trouble.
If you are about 22, Imagine being put back into a 13 year old body with the physical status and mental bent you had at 17 or 18?
Now from 13 to 18 you are going to live out the same general pattern you did from 18 to 22!!!! This is what is happening, and it is not the sweet Mr. Big movie with Tom Hanks. It is killing the hormonal feed first world educatonal systems; already plagued by medical, psychological and learning problems of plague proportions.
With our technical world requiring a 18 to 23 year warehouse period for survival; (up to 1/3 of a life time) we are faced with bodies going south and technology going north at a rapid rate.
This downshift can be influenced by elevation!
Girls who live at lower elevations have a lower age range for mensus. More of the human population is moving to sea level positions.
Even global warming could have an effect.

Some start as early as 8 years old. Some at a later time. It normally happens at about 9-14 years old. I know of some cases where they started younger.
