Which came first - the chicken or the egg? "The chicken" came first - in the sentence of the question. If the question is phrased differently, the answer is different.

1) The egg came first because any female sex cell is called an egg...
2) An animal that was not a chicken laid the chicken egg which contained the first chicken. In this case the egg came first..

To answer this question from a scientific point of view, the egg came first.
Eggs evolved long before chickens did. Dinosaurs, from which birds evolved, along with other organisms that are collectively called Amniota, also lay eggs, as do playtpuses and echidnas, which are a related group to mammals. So eggs long pre-date chickens, which are jungle fowl that were domesticated long after birds first evolved back in the dinosaur age.

The egg did. In order for an animal to mutate into the form that we commonly call a chicken, it would have had to have been born from an egg.
Therefore, the egg came first.

The egg. If you subscribe to evolution (let's not get into that can of worms, though), then somewhere, somewhen, a creature that was *not* a chicken (genetically speaking) laid an egg, and out of it came a creature that *was* a chicken.

my theory is this lol. i think that teh chicken came first cause before the chicken there were animals that evolved into the chickens. like maybe a fish or something lol and over millions of years they evolve and make eggs.
