Odd isn't it, Janis Joplin, grace slick, Jim Morrison.And its not only in music but in general art. look at van gohg or read a book by Thomas H. hunt(fear and loathing in las Vegas).
What i think all these people you mentioned are talented and made the music because of who they where not what they toked or shot up. drugs was just a life style to them.

Most of the people you named are professional college educated musicians and performers, and few probably have ever even taken drugs. Rock is as phony as the movies. Don't be deceived. Crosby is an exception. Everyone knows about the Dead, Stones, and Beatles, but I bet even their drug use is wildly exageratted.

It's true that many creative people have certain kinds of mental problems. This is much more common in creative people (like musicians) than normal people. (See reference below). This I believe would make them more prone to try drugs. Also their wealth makes it easy to pay for it.
