castrol syntec is group 3 hydrocracked petroleum.... very good oil, just its overpriced since group 3 is cheaper to make.....
Mobil one or pennzoil platinum are great oils..... very easy to find nearly anywhere...
Royal purple, redline, or amsoil are not as easy to find, and can be more expensive...... unless your racing..... really no need for redline or royal purple....., and unless you want to do big extended drains.... amsoil isn't needed....

The best synthetic oil, as far as I'm concerned, is Redline synthetics. Their business philosophy is, if a better ingredient is found, use it... no matter what the cost. Quality is the most important thing. Royal Purple is close, and so is Amsoil. Most others switch to a more "cost effective" ingredient if you can keep you quality nearly as good verses the cost. The best readily available synthetic is Mobil 1. Their quality is very good and the price is very affordable, too. There is a synthetic oil under a well known brand name that uses ingredients that are the cheapest available, most refined from products refined from petroleum. I am not going to tell you which one because I don't relish facing the possibility of litigation.

All synthetic oils are similar, buy the one on sale and the one with recommended viscosity by the car maker. [10W-30, 5W-30, 0W-20 etc... etc] depending on weather and driving conditions].
Mobile 1 has better ranges of viscosity than other brands, however if the recommended viscosity is 10W-30, then get equivalent generic brand [also 100% synthetic] as long as it has the API logo on the oil product. API has a circular logo on the oil products for the usage in cars and trucks.

Mobil 1
Mobil 1, the world's leading synthetic motor oil exceeds the industry’s toughest standards and outperforms all conventional oils. In fact, many car builders put Mobil 1 in their vehicles before they leave the factory. And it is used by more than 70 percent of teams in the three NASCAR® series.
Available in a 15W-50 grade, Mobil 1® Extended Performance
15W-50's high viscosity provides outstanding performance in high-revving, high-temperature conditions.
Great oil !
We used this in our race cars..

i bypass off of what my dad continuously instructed me, no matter if it truly is common is common.. if its synthetic than its synthetic. merely because i'm an issue wart, i could get an oil substitute. yet that is merely me. once you've an ordinary mechanic, call them and word what they say. If it delivers the peace of recommendations understanding that your oil is an similar, on the suited element, and clean; I say do it.

I used Amsoil in the oilfield years ago and it worked great then.
I don't know if it's the same now.
I use regular Exxon oil and change it every 3,000 miles.
I can't afford to use the synthetics that often, but I don't think their necessary unless your unable to change it on a regular basis.

You are going to hear everything. This is one of the biggest debates in the auto and motorcycle industry. Fact is, keep your oil clean and don't mix the two..
