Death By Proxy: The net effect of the Cold War on the Later Portion of the 20th Century

OK. There was nothing COLD about the Cold War. Lot's of men and women died while serving in NATO or the Warsaw pact during it. But it was mainly training accidents or natural causes and not major combat (Unless you include Korea and Vietnam as part of the Cold War). We came very close to all out nuclear war several times that the public never knew about. The Cold War was different, there was no combat footage for TV, it was not a traditional war that made good TV. But there were millions of people who fought in it. And the US won!!!

Democracy is good, communism is evil. The Russians and the USA decided that the only way to live in peace with this divergent paradigm was to arm ourselves to the teeth. Communism never worked very well, and so it imploded in the 80's. Game over.

Nothing happened much and it was boring. Things could have gotten out of hand and may of caused a war that would of ended life on earth or at least humans. But I never did.
