In an "atom smasher" you accelerate protons faster and faster and you collide them together. Many pieces and fragments are actually much more massive than the proton itself.

That would be a magic trick just like writing graffitti on the wall.
No such thing as converting energy into mass, Except on a biology scale. Usualy the energy input converts to mass usually around the belly of the Body.

I think mass is not converted to energy during fission. The atom just releases energy when the splitting occurs.

One example of energy being converted into mass happens when a photon is absorbed by an electron in an atom. The energy of the photon becomes part of the mass of the atom.
(When you burn a piece of wood, some of the heat energy in the fire was contributed by sunlight.)
Another example is any "endothermic reaction," a chemical reaction that absorbs heat (which itself is the kinetic energy or "energy of motion" of matter). The energy is stored in the bonds that are formed by the reaction.

there is no known way to convert a massless energy form into a form that has mass. possibly this happened during the big bang but no one really knows. the term is entropy. unless we can travel backwards in time, ALL mass is (slowly) being transformed into energy, not the other way around.

Nuclear fission splits matter into subatomic particles. Like a shattered egg shell nobody has found a way to put the pieces back together, so no teleportation or "Beam me up Scottie".
