I am 17 years old with many volunteer experience and a work experience but never have been employed for a real job. I've been a little, er, desperate for a job lately, but i'm pretty picky--i dont want to work at a fastfood place, instead i want to work at a video store since it is my biggest interest..(movies, entertainment). I;ve thought about applying for local theatres (my second choice)

I would like to know what the age limit is to work at, say blockbuster and the qualifications/skills they would look for or expect. Do the employer train you if you get hired, as well?

You have to be at least 18 to work in a video store due to the adult content. I'm not sure about Blockbuster, but I work for Family Video and they look for people that can work effectively in stressful situations, have great customer service skills, can make quick decisions and can work flexable hours (this is the condensed version).

Try starting out at the movie theaters until you're 18 and then apply at the video store.

Good luck!

You sound a lot more intelligent than most of the teenagers who are asking job-related questions on this site. If you're interested in movies, you'd do well working at either a movie rental store or a cinema. Employers are looking for people with confident, outgoing personalities, good communication skills, and the ability to handle cash accurately (sales, returns and nightly balancing). Knowledge of movies is important, but secondary to the other skills. If you get hired they will probably do some training by having you "shadow" a current employee. Don't expect too much formal training- mostly you'll learn through doing things for yourself.

Build a good resume and cover letter (if you need tips, get a book from the public library and photocopy the sample resumes). Emphasize your skills first, and your interest in movies second. Be very clear in your mind about what you'll bring to the employer, and why they should hire you.
