Well, for a desktop, is AMD mobile processors best buy or Intel(R) Pentium M?
also, can Corel WordPerfect(R) Office 12 upgrate to Microsoft(R) Office Small Business Edition ? is there a big difference between the two? coz i was thinking that the latter one is much more expensive and do they have the same function?

Corel WordPerfect is a competitor of Microsoft Office, so no it cannot be upgraded to Office Small Business. They are 2 different programs by different mfr's that do essentially the same thing. Corel has been losing the battle for years.
As for your processor choices, those are laptop cpu's. Then Pentium M(mobile) is better than the mobile Semprons and the Turions. For a desktop though I prefer AMD. The Pentium 4's are nice and seem to perform better on business apps but the Athlon64 is clearly better in games and graphics related programs. If you know what the specific processors are in the systems you are considering you can compare performance at Tom's Hardware Guide with their interactive cpu charts. They compare frames per second, time to completion and synthetic benchmarks.
Dual-core seems to be the way of the future, the goal is to be able to run multiple programs simultaneously. I would suggest that you aim for either a Pentium D or an Athlon64 X2. Celeron's are ok but a little weak and the Semprons are a little better but with the recent release by Intel of Core 2 Duo chips, the price on the Athlons has dropped. Get a 160gb hard drive at least, 1 gb of ram is handy and try to avoid integrated graphics. Integrated graphics use some of the ram in your computer, discrete graphics cards have their own memory.
The link is for the cpu charts at Tom's Hardware.
Hope this helps.
You can install both WordPerfect and MS Office.

I'd go with a P4 either HT or Dual Core. Celeron D if NO gaming or mega multitasking.
Get 1GB Ram minimum. Get a REAL video card prefer 128 ram or better and skip the Intel 900 on board video crap.
Skip Corel and MS Office----I have used both and NOW I use and love Easy Office Premium just 50 bucks and does what MS Office Pro does and more and is 100% compatible with MS.

I was on Intel for years but just bought a new PC and got an AMD processor. It is fine. Bought it at OfficeDepot. Best Buy drives me nuts with the loud thumping music as background noise. Stick with MS Office if you are sharing stuff with others. Get the educational version if you can and save big bucks. Otherise the others can do the basic functions fairly well if you are short on funds. I prefer Gateway or HP over Dell or Compaq.
eMachines might be OK since they are owned by Gateway now.

The processors are the same... some people have personal preferences, but when it comes down to raw performance, they are the same.
Microsoft Office is vastly better than WP. WordPerfect is missing key elements of Office. Also, Office is a universal piece of software that will serve as a good medium for passing data files back and forth from computer to computer.

Is having graphics (for gaming) important?
Personally, I like AMD because there's an open AGP slot for graphics. . .while the Intel Celeron has shared memory (and it's harder or more expensive to provide for gaming applications).
Don't know about Corel. . .I would recommend sticking with Microsoft. . .and don't forget (if you have school age kids or have a spouse or partner who's a teacher) that you can pick up the "educational" version of Office at a substantial discount to the regular rack price.
Hope this helps!

progression one to the specification that you want is continually going to be more cost-effective than procuring one to an same uncomplicated. it is providing that you've the necessary expertise to construct it contained in the first position. if you're no longer functional sufficient to construct it then you actually could have one equipped for you, that is going to likely be particularly extra intense priced yet no longer too a lot. custom builds are also easier to improve, commonly, than prebuilt ones too! I at the moment plan on progression a DX10 in a position gadget for decrease than £2 hundred (it is accessible in accordance to an editorial in this months laptop format!)
