Be sure to label the boxes by room and content. Wrap glassware and fragiles in newspaper with no air space in the boxes.
Only keep out a suitcase with clothes and toiletries, pack everything else.
My husband used to be a mover years ago and he says the biggest problem is waiting until the last minute to pack up the little stuff.
Give yourself plenty of time and do it right. If you are moving in a few weeks, then plan to entirely pack and clean one room per day or something reasonable so you don't get overwhelmed.
Moving is a great time to clear out the clutter. If you haven't used something in the last 6 months, then get rid of it (excluding seasonal clothing/goods).
If you have time, have a garage sale to sell of the clutter then take any unsold items to your local Goodwill or second hand store.

I am an expert on moving...done it over 18 times...ugh!
First, get a pad of paper. Then as you pack rooms, like the kitchen for example, you number the box and write it on the list with the number and what the contents are so you won't be digging for a pan the first day in your new place. Also, by numbering the boxes, you know how many you have when you arrive, if one is missing, you'll know right away. You can also put little colored stickers on the boxes that all go to one room or just number those all in a row. For example; all master bedroom boxes are from 1-10. Use a good black marker and write the number in a couple of places. When you have something that should be kept upright, make sure to put a big arrow and the words "this side up" on the box.
Pack things well with paper and peanuts and anything that will protect breakables. Seal boxes with a good packing tape not just on the top, but bottoms. Write "fragile" on breakable items.
Valuables should be brought with you (like jewelry). Medications should also be brought with you if you take them on a daily basis. Plants need to be watered heavily a day before to keep them moist.
If you pack with good sturdy boxes, they will protect your belongings. Have a safe and organized move!

One good tip I got was to get a small plastic box to hold all of your packing supplies - tape, tape gun, markers, scissors etc. Put everything back in this box!
That way you will not spend hours looking for the tape when the house is turned upside down.
Fill boxes completely so that they do not collapse.
Some people use (special) plastic wrap on their dresser drawers and don't pack them - just move it as is.
You can rent cardboard wardrobes (some movers supply them)that allow you to transfer all of your hanging clothes directly from closet to wardrobe and back to closet without folding or taking them off hangers.
Good luck.

Pack room-by-room. Focus on one area of a room at a time and don’t mix items from different rooms in one box. To prevent miniature knickknacks and small items from being lost or mistakenly thrown out with the packing paper, wrap them in brightly-colored tissue paper.
Label clearly. On the top and side of each box, write a general description of the contents and the room name. Use different colored markers for each room, which will provide additional clarity for you and your movers.

Organization is key! Get a permanent marker to label boxes showing either what's in them. Gather a bunch of old sales papers or news papers to wrap any type of breakable item. Invest in some good packaging tape. It always help to put your old t-shirts, pants, dresses or any type of clothing into boxes with breakable items to ensure they are padded well.

Don't blend fragile stuff and heavy stuff in one box. Occasionally these kinds of moving boxes could be turned upside down while on the move, possibly at circumstances like this, the hefty items can easily smash the fragile kinds.

Mad for Mac answered the way I would have. But she's only moved 18 times. I've been moved over 200. Believe me, I learned how to pack at a very early age. That is how my mom always did it.

If you have any valuables / jewelry or family heirlooms. Don't pack them in a moving van !! Take them in your own personal vehicle!!! Most movers are shady or couldn' get a job anywhere else because they have been in trouble a lot or no one else will hire them. !! No jokes here...
