In today's culture, many people have different beliefs and thoughts about their own personal God. A diety of any kind, I believe would be offended at this phrase. As well, if a person has no God, but has any thought of kindness or concern for others feelings, it would logically follow that you should not use this phrase as 1) you don't have a god and 2) you may be offending someone who does.
We don't say "O my satan" "O my shiva" "O my Zeus" "O my mother earth" "O my crystal of power" "O my inner self"..... Why "O my god" ?

It's called
'Just a saying'
It really has no meaning other than being a sound of surprise or amazement. It is not about any gods, perosnal or otherwise.

I have wondered if, every time God's name is used in a show of some kind, that isn't really taking the Lord's name in vain. If it is not actual speech TO or ABOUT God, how can it be anything but a violation of the commandment to not take God's name in vain? Should it be prohibited by law? No, but it would not hurt if people encouraged movie and TV companies to stop frivolously using God's name in vain.

Many persons do not believe in God, which is very sad. Me personally, I don't use that phrase, but I know plenty of people who do use it, even people who are Christians. The reason is that many of us(Yes, Us) do not guard our tongues and watch what we say. We are all guilty of it. Each and every one of us are guilty of that. When one uses that phrase, it is taking the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Many persons do not think about it when the say it and they are liable to get upset when they are called out on it because they don't want to change.

Because it is and was around a hundred years ago. "O my God" or "Great God Almighty', "Yea Gods", "God damn your soul to hell", "Holy jumped up Jehoshaphat", "God damn it".

Did say and still say, "Jumped up Jesus", "Jesus Keerist!", "For Keerist sake", "Oh, for the love of Keerist!"
These are colloquialisms and are not meant to offend, nor do many segments of even Christian society find them so.
