1. Short for Packet InterNet Groper, ping is a utility used to verify if a network data packet is capable of being distributed to an address without errors. The ping utility is commonly used to check for network errors.
2. In computer gaming, a ping, also known as a high or low ping, is a measurement of how fast the connection to the game server the player has. For example, a player with a 50 ping is more than likely going to have a much easier and better game than a player with a 250 ping.

Ping is the time it takes for a package to be sent from your computer to a server and back.
Because this is in the game section im gonna assume your asking cause its in a game you play. So, in games, ping is usually measured in milliseconds. The lower the ping you have is better, unless its 0 that means you have no connection to the server.
Why does it matter? When you have a lower ping your computer is better connected to the server and you will experience less internet lag (when people or items shift places cause your high pinging)
its kinda like watching a movie flashes on and off. if the flash repeats every 30ms you will probably be able to watch the movie without much problems. But if the flash repeats every second (1000 ms)you might miss very important parts of the movie.

I'm not sure what it mean exactly word by word, but it is used to measure the network connection speed in chat rooms and multiplayer areas like poker, and in online pc video games like halo and unreal tournament.
The higher the ping, the greater the lag you get while playing
of course, the lower the ping, the better you are able to play.
But I guess that is normal since I tried to play UT2004 with dial-up modem and I can hardly do anything because the ping was 674 and the leader of the deathmatch has a ping of 12.

if you have a high ping your game might be laggy and you might get disconected or kicked. try to get as low of ping a possible.

In Euchre "ping" is when you are disconnected from the site.
The proper term is he/she has"no ping" or no response
