The winters are to be avoided try visiting in the month of march when its not too cold and still you might get to see a little snow.

Food is never a problem but eat at proper branded hotels N restaurants in case you a visiting north India of the first time.

Personally to me, all times are good to this pilgrimage except rainy season and Navratras. Interestingly, Navratras are considered very appropriate to visit Vaishno Devi, but the kind of crowd at that time is very discouraging - as you hardly get those precious moments to be face to face meaningfully with the Almighty! Food is hardly a problem there now.

In case you are accompanying with small children or toddlers, DO avoid peak of winter also - December and January.
