Social conservatives (ie usually members of the Christian Right) are always talking about "values" this and "values that". In politics, they are referred to as "values voters".
The specific "values" that they usually care about seem to be things like: stopping abortion, stopping gays from marrying and expressing their gayness, keeping religion in the schools and the public eye, supporting our troops, staying the course in the war with iraq, and promoting jesus and god.

Now I'm not here to argue with those values. I agree that those are values, for the people who believe in them, and they are free to hold whatever values dear they choose.

But what I want to argue is that EVERY human being has VALUES. Liberals and non-conservatives have values too. They may include: protecting human rights, protecting the environment, universal health care, promoting education, fighting social injustice, and peace. These are VALUEs too.

So why dont Democrats show the voters that they have values too

Haven't you ever heard of "short hand"? In fact ........ I'm trying to think of a certain word that begins with "b" and it means some kind of short, seemingly simple expression but which actually conveys a great deal of information.

Anyway, (I wish I could think of that word!) the social conservatives had every right to be extremely concerned about moral values in election 2004 because of the Supreme Court's "sodomy" decision in 2003 followed a few months later by the decision made by the court in Massachusetts. And every one understood that the IMPLICIT message in "moral values" was about those things, not "protecting human rights, protecting the environment, universal health care, ..." etc.

Your 3rd paragraph sounds almost exactly like Bill Maher about one week after election 2004.

Relative values (values of Democrats) aren't equivalent to static values.

Religious values are superior to relative values because they are (or should be) unchanging. A value that is changing with the blowing winds, trends and popular opinion polls aren't absolute...so they carry less power and authority.

For instance, drug laws....could change and cocaine could be legalized. Then, some would say there isn't anything morally wrong with it, since it isn't against the law. Others, with deeper religious values. Basically, these morals won't change as easily.
