My sony DVD r/w drive will copy dvd's but not music on cd-r's?

Asks me to make surethe disc is clean and it is

Your DVD drive might now support the use of cd-r to record music...if you have nero look it up in nerotools...it shows all your drives and the media that's supported by them.

Depends on the software that you are using. Nero, you have to switch between the mediums.(change the burning disk type, dvd,cdr)
