Hahahaha, I can completely relate. I am not Egyptian but I grew up in Zamalek, in Cairo, Egypt for the first 10 years of my life. Not only do I consider it my home, but it was an advanced city with beautiful people who were very kind and optimistic. There was always something going on, and things to do. Both new and old. It really bothered me when people ask me how I managed to live there. They ask me the same things, like if we rode in cars or in camels, and if there were paved streets. Or is we spoke 'Egyptian'? And really stupid things like that.
You just have to realize that many of these people don't take the time to learn anything else but what Angelina Jolie named her current baby.
I wish I could be in Egypt right now! Hope you're having fun there! :))

I have actually visited Cairo but it was back in 1981 There were army soldiers with Kalashnikovs all on the street corners It was a very modern looking city but had many donkey driven carts on the citystreets mixing it up with the Egyptian made Fiats. All the taxi drivers had 1 hand on the wheel and 1 hand on the horn.Toot toot.We stayed at the Nefertiti palace hotel quite close to the museum.I had many good Egyptian friends while on a job as a consultant.Huge pictures of Anwar Sadat all over the place.Later sadly to be assasinated.I'm sure Egypt has changed since then, but I'll always remember it like this.

I think of Egypt as a place like the Middle East where people can be executed for bad behavior and the politics are very unsettling...
I don't know if this is true or not but it's what I heard. I heard that gay people are beheaded. It doesn't sound like a very friendly place but I have not been there so I don't have first hand knowledge... I live in the USA.

Actually yeah. I think of desert, camels, pyramids and hieroglyphics. It wasn't until talking to someone from Egypt that I found out there was Internet there.

LOL! That is so funny! I think everyone has a stereotypical image of cultures that differ from their own. I think of Egypt as a well off country that could and do bank off of the US and other country's images of them. Kind of like how western states sell a hell of a lot of cowboy hats when no one who lives here wears them.

I always figured there were cosmopolitan cities, just like here, and little places out in the middle of nowhere (also just like here). I'd still love to go and see the Valley of the Kings and the Pyramids....

Well the first thing that comes to mind is pryamids and the Nile, but then I remember that there are alot of big cities and modern people there too. It also makes me think of that song by the Bangles :)

I picture children digging through garbage dumps for food and things to sell. That's what they do in Cairo.
