If you are driving, it is about a 13 hour drive. And about 800 miles if I remember right. I live near Elgin, and I have driven to New Jersey many times. You basically take I-90 to I-80. Take I-80 most of the way. The link below (not sure if it will work though) is for driving directions from Elgin to New Jersey. You may need to look up what town in NJ to get better directions though, and to find out exactly what highways you need to take in NJ. I-80 will get you almost all the way there, but you have to switch to local highways at some point.

Do the mapquest thing to get an exact distance but it looks like you take the I80 out of NJ and stay on the I90 when they split up in Indiana. If you are a solo driver, it looks like the better part of 2 days and a mess of $ for the toll roads in OH,IN,and IL. Elgin has more than 1 exit so give mapquest the exact street address of your destination. If you will be getting to Chicago between 4 and 10 am or 2 and 7 pm add another 2 to 3 hours to your travel time. Chicago gives lessons on how to do rush hour right.
