Take your choice:
God allows it either because he doesn't care, in which case he is a lie; or because he's incapable of doing anything about it, in which case he is a lie.
OR
God doesn't exist, and things like this are proof of it

I think this question should be re-phased as "Why humans allow that?" we externalise and blame way too much! This is not about a God/Human relationship this is about a human/human relationship! I believe that there is something there guiding humanity, a force maybe?, some people may call it "God" but I don't think of he/she or it as a magical genie sitting there deciding our fate! I reckon we as humans choose our own fate and we have choosen a world constructed out of OUR very thoughts about how things should be based on history, religion and economics. The world at present and the shape it is in, is in my opinion a direct reflection of our values as a society. The reasons we see the world in this state is more fundamental really, I guess some of us don't believe we can have it any other way! we have created a world where some have! and others have not ! where people loose or win!!! and we have created the conditions and infastructure to support this belief. Also we created an idealism that perpetuates this through the media to reinforce these belief. How can it be that in 2006 some people in certain countries around the world are starving and others elsewhere live in such luxury??? here is the answer: Because clearly humanitarian issues are not valued in this world above the almightly dollar and our persuits for materalism, pleasure and perfection thats why!!! and to make things worse; the will to change this is not in the minds of the people who hold the power and have the control to do so!!! There is no reason why all people everywhere cannot have enough food in their stomachs, a safe place to live and gain a decent education !!! but what is missing is the will and insight !!! While ever the wealthiest western countries continue to exploit the poorer undeveloped countries and then keep it all to themselves as iillustrated in your post above I guess these issues will always be so! untill something happens that changes our value system!! It will continue! I dont think humans can blame anyone or anything for the way the world is really when we collectively created it!

Take the countries individually where the problems are there. Each of them leaves their land uncultivated and don't want to work. Still the world is trying to help them, but it cannot reach every corners.
Famines due to drought, floor etc. are different. Look at most of the African countries. The rulers are corrupted and they don't care about the poor people there. No initiated from their side to develop the land or encourage farming.
To a great extent they suffer because of their own laziness. Although this is the fact, I feel, the rest of the world must do something to save them immediately and at the same time to develop the lands. Then only it can bring longstanding solutions.

Suffering is a relative term. Well - this Disparity has an answer which cannot be agreed by all in common. No one is born equal - its upto us to make what we are. While nature showers rich resources in continents like africa, they are unable to utilize them but these same resouces are plunderd by the West.
Countries like japan (which was reduced to rubble by those 2 bombs) have few resoures (not even enough land )- but can dare to compete with rich america. Same is true even with tiny Taiwan. Most of the disasters - famine - flood or what ever they are are man-made not God made.
Its we who cutdown forests - leading to drought and flood. Global Warming, Pollution, health problems, War, terrorism ....
- the list is endless and so is the discussion

i am not much of a believer when it comes to religion but i only believe three things: 1) god made us and brought us into this world, 2) he watches over us, and 3) he will be there to welcome us in the end. I don't believe he can do anything to stop us from suffering, i think it's all up to us. It's not like He can just snap his fingers and all the pain will be gone, he created us with free will, he gave us the choice on whether to save humanit or destroy it. It just so happens that some people want to destroy it, hence the suffering of other people.

Before we incarnate into the physical we choose the major themes and challenges of our lives. Not all the nitty gritty details, we get further choice during our lifetimes as to how we will handle these challenges, but we choose them prior to being born, even the parents and siblings we will have, for the evolution of our souls.
It's easy to blame all things bad on God, since God makes a very big target, but the fact is that we are the authors of our own experiences, via God's gift of free will and hence, the universal law of attraction.
The universal law of attraction maintains that the vibrations we emit into the world via our conscious or unconscious beliefs, thoughts, emotions, words (written and verbal) and actions, and whether they are positive or negative, love-based or fear-based, lead to the events that we experience in return, in one form or another.
These vibrations occur singly, by individuals and collectively, by societies and cultures.
It is humanity's collective vibrations of fear and hatred that lead to disasters, natural or unnatural, including war and terrorism, disease, pestilence, starvation etc. etc.
God gives free will and does not revoke or interfere with it, so it is a gift with a double-edged sword, so to speak. Once given, it is our responsibility. Not God's.

It's all a matter of time. When sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, God was terribly sad, because he knew that the world was going to be full of suffering, wars, and afflictions.
But he gave us the ability to choose good and evil. God asked Adam not to eat the fruit that would give him the knowledge of good and evil, but he did. God knew that eventually he would have to destroy all the sinners, but he knew also that it would be terrible to do that. So he had a plan. His plan was to defeat Satan by giving his own Son Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins. Once he did that, he could save people from going to hell if they only would accept Jesus as thier savior and turn from thier sin.
He also would be able to end all the suffering, becuase his judgement on the world would not be as terrible. He's waiting and waiting until he just has to end all this. When that happens Jesus will come back, and will destroy Satan, and all God's enemies and all that didn't accept Jesus as savior. God has to do all this because it would be wrong to let evil continue. Due to the nature of God that he is Holy (pure) he cannot have anything to do with sin, or sinners. So when we die, we can't be with God if we are not purified by the blood of Jesus. Satan wants us to think that God is bad for letting suffering happen, but Satan has a part in all this suffering, because he tempted Adam and Eve, and has been accusing people of thier sin so that they would go to hell. I think Satan's plan is to go back to the time before Jesus died for our sins, or nullify what Jesus did by getting everyone to hate God, then Satan probably hopes that if we all don't follow God God will not be able to excecute the great and terrible judgement, or maybe Satan is buying time. I say maybe, because I don't have any scriptural backing for the parts where I say maybe, and probably, but it's fairly obvious that when Jesus died on the cross it was a great blow to Satan, and it does say in the Bible that he knows his time is short. Remember 2000 years is like a day compared to eternity. The time is short. Read the Bible, and turn to God. The time is short, if you see what's going on in the Middle East, and with nukes infiltrating terrorist countries, it's not a pretty picture.

I can think of three excellent explanations:
1) God's concept of what is good and right is infinitely more complex than yours.
2) God has too much respect for human free will to intervene in earthly affairs (which, after all, are as nothing compared to the blessed eternity of Heaven).
3) God doesn't exist.
Take your pick! They all work. And if you're really upset about the plight of the third-world poor, I suggest you go do something about it.

Gee, what if there was no god to worry one way or the other...? Do the techtonic plates worry about mankind when they begin shifting and colliding into one another cause calamities world wide. Does that planet destroying asteroid care that humans are praying that it won't continue its irreversible date with extinction destiny?
Does the sun worry that it will eventually supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp?
