Given his outstanding efforts to gain India' independence which made him an exceptional figure worldwide, He was the most eligible to become India' first president, Why He didn't accept the position?

He groomed political leaders such as Nehru to lead the country. He was not interested in the operations of government as he was already in his 70s. He was at odds to some degree with the Congress Party on the partition of the country at the time independence came.

first of all in india primeminister is the powerful post and not the president....

mahatma gandhi as you might know was the main leader of indian independency struggle.........if u view his attitude he never wished a post of power and wished to be a common indian....he didnt take up any post in the indian national congress which was the forerunner in the movement...he led them ...he made mass base of congress strong...but never took a post ....thats what makes him unique a true mahatma.....

not like many of the world leaders now...who are interested in various powers than welfare of the people......evidently there was lots of able statesman whom he believed could lead india including nehru.......mahatma was the major matyr needed for the attainment of indian independence....which we didnt win completely untill now.....
