The attraction of most anime is in the story, not the art. Sadly, since most anime is drawn using the "shift & trace" method, it tends to get more then a little "generic" looking. Add to the mix that most "junior" designers work for so long under a "senior" that when they get the chance to do their own designs, they end up looking exactly like what they've been working on for all those years. Most designs used in anime are reviewed for "cultural identity" (read in as lack of creativity) before being allowed to go into production. If you want less generic deisngs, you have to find the obscure anime.

I suppose it depends on what you have tried. There are many different types of manga and anime out there all with their own plots and such. The characters will look similar because that is just the style that anime is drawn in, and it could be that it just isn't for you.

i feel the same.. all of the characters look very similar to me.. i guess i dont appreciate anime art enough to truley have an interest in it..(i find it boring) and in my opinion there are so much more advanced cartoons/ comics out there these days with technology and all.. so i suppose it seems old

Whatever you do, stay away from Dragonball, Pokemon, Inuyasha, and Yu-gi-oh. If you watch some Miyazaki, like Spirited Away (subtitled), Howl's Moving Castle, or My Neighbor Totoro, I predict you'll find yourself pleased with how whimsical and imaginative anime can be. Not all Japanese animation is big eyes and flying through space doing Ultimate Attacks or whatever.

it all depends on the story line and characters. when u begin 2 look at the characters as people with their own personalities and see what they contribute to the story, u begin 2 understand. 4 ex. i can't watch all anime because some is a little too extreme 4 me. but i can watch inuyasha or naruto. it depend on ur taste

Well, I'm starting to get tired of this kind of question. Why do
people do the things they like, well, because they like them, duh. It may seem the same or simular to people who don't care for it, but with the ones who like anime, we can usually tell seperate characters apart.
Many people who do not share the interest don't take the time to accept and go on, they have to ask why the others don't like what they like, because why in Heaven's name should anyone like something other than what they like?
I'm a bookworm, first and formost, and never really cared for live-action, so I like anime and manga because there is a huge variety of stories and in a format that I prefer. You don't have to agree with me, I'm sure there are things you care for that I wouldn't like either, but hey, I'm accepting enough not to ask you why.

If you think all anime looks the same, you haven't been looking hard enough. It comes in different genres, some anime is created for kids in mind, whille other animes are created for older audiences....

All is totally different. Each and every character plays their own role. Every story has different storyline. If you really wana get into anime, try by watching 'graveyard of fireflies', 'my neighbour totoro', 'naruto', 'prince of tennis' and others. then you will start to see the difference in anime.

That's because anime is Japanese cartoons. That's why you don't get it. Watch it more. Then you might start to like it.

You have to follow the plot/story lines. I used to hate all Anime, but now I think I have a manga addiction...a serious serious manga addiction.
