On vacation in Paris, Amsterdam and London, the apartments we rented had no window screens, yet there were fewer bugs in the apartment than we'd expect at home. Are the flies differenet, do they not like to go indoors?

but doesn't mean you need to open every one of them.
you can get screens, they do exist
bugs exist too, they enter homes in Europe too!

Of course we have bugs here and they do like to come inside too - expecially when it gets dark and the lights are on inside. Screens do exsist, but keep in mind, the windows are different than in the states. I have never seen sliding windows here. They all open like a door. Plus, we have shutters which are lowered from the top of the window. That makes it a bit difficult to mount screens on the outside.

We Europeans are old-fashioned, that's why. And too lazy to change our ways. Screen doors don't go well with European architecture, either.
There are as many bugs as in any other place. Some cities spray chemicals from planes, others don't.
Flies you have more in agricultural areas, not many in the cities, while mosquitos thrive around swamps, lakes and rivers.
I love my window screens in US.

They have no mosquitos or other pests, and I never saw a housefly either. Sweet!

nope, but they threw substances in the air to kill these bugs.
