MTV was great when it first came out because they played nothing but videos. On a business standpoint, though, MTV made the right move to get away from and all music video format because now they have people watching at 30 minute to 1 hour stretches instead of watching 5-10 minutes at a time.

If MTV didn't go to it's current format, it probably would have never got as big as it is now.

MTV was great when it first came on because all it did was play videos. The mix of music was unpredictable and so varied. You could see punk, rock, new wave, hip hop, pop...if a band had a video, they would show it. We probably had it on 20 hours a day in our apartment. I became familiar with bands and musicians that never got airplay on the radio.

And they had the best live New Year's Eve show on television in the 80's too.

I still love music but MTV doesn't seem to be about music any more, just marketing the same old, same old to teeny boppers.

When Mtv first came on it was nothing but music videos 24/7. It was truly music tv. But, it created a total music revolution. People found out that their favorite radio artists were not at all the beautiful people they imagined them to be. Some of the first videos have guys wearing tons of make up, or dressed in weird "hide their true looks" costumes, or a lot of sexy looking models to get you to look at anything but the artist. Then, the looks of the artists began to outweigh the talent. Then the programming began to head toward other avenues. Now Mtv plays very little music.

When MTV first came on it was awesome, music videos all the time with short blurbs from the DJ's. If you stayed up late you could see cutting Punk and Alternative. Then they added a few game shows and that was okay, after the Real World its been all downhill. MTV is just one show after another.

It was better because it was the first. It was revolutionary for its time and it rocked. Why? They've always been known for catering to a young audience. They used to play music videos and now they do reality tv. So yes, they have gone down hill but its what the kids want now, besides now theres other stations like vh1, fuse, and bet to compete with. MTV still is cool no matter what anyone says.

MTV back in the '80's was much better than it is now. Back then it was all about music and music videos. But now they have movies and other stuff on it, and not many videos to watch.

What about you? Was MTV better when it first came on or is it better now? Why or why not?

MTV was definitly better in the old days of MTV. I miss the days of the original headbangers ball, and the days of the rock videos. They don't even play videos anymore and TRL does not count. MTV sucks.

When MTV (Music tv) first cam on.... It played music and lots of it.
Then they started with a little of this and a little of that.
Now I can honestly say that the last 20 + times that I have turned it on, there was no music!!!
MTV today should not even be called MTV as they play no music. they stink.

MTV when it started was better because they played music and did not have crappy reality shows and other non-music related shows on. Yes, the VJs were not the best, but they played videos.

It was defintely better then. Today, basically there is no more music, just those stupid "reality" show like Laguna Beach and the Hills. I actuallly would like to see more music and less talk! MTV was based off of music and its strayed away from that.
