The treaty that gave the USA access to Guantanamo was signed long before Cuba went communist. Read your history. The USA occupied Cuba after the Spanish-American war in 1898.

that is why we kept ownership of the territory. However it is no longer a military base because the Navy use Nuclear power warships so they don't have to refuel, now it is used as a prison and a means to piss of Fidel Castro. The lease of the land was signed before Castro siezed control of Cuba and it can't be broken unless both parties consent to it, or Cuba get smart and take it to international court.

Up until 1958, Cuba was a haven. Then Castro expelled the Bautista Government, but they had no rights over Gitmo.

Maybe this will help unstupify you! We actually lease the land from the Cuban government. It's strange, but true.

Welcome to Guantanamo Bay! It's one of the reasons Cuba is so ticked off at the US -- they want their island back and without any foreign camps set up and without the prisoners of war that the US is holding there.
