Start with the engine:
I would buy:
Kholer or Honda
I would not buy:
Briggs-and-Straton or Tecumseh
Cub Cadet has a reputation for quality, but are priced higher because of that. Sears makes good lawnmowers with Kholer engines and may be a better price than the Cub Cadet.
I'm really down on Home Depot right now. Try some other stores like Sears or an authorized local dealer.

Get the Lawn-Boy. Only buy a Cub Cadet if it is from a dealership that also does their own service. Otherwise if you buy a Cub Cadet from Home Depot and you start to have troubles with it, it is going to be very hard to get warranty service because most Cub Cadet dealers only service what they sell. I work for Lowes and we stopped carrying the Cub Cadet riding mowers this year because of that fact. (Both Home Depot and TSC don't do repairs on these)

Considering the options you mention I'd opt for the Honda powered Cub Cadet (I don't fancy Home Depot). I personally own a Toro mower which has served me very well for the last 18 months. It too has the Tecumseh engine which hasn't missed a beat and starts everytime the key is turned.

I have a Troy Built, which I believe is owned by the same company as Cub and MTD. It's crap. Two weeks after I bought it the engine started spewing oil. Warranty covered the repair. Power start was next to go out. Currently has an electrical short. In short, it's crap. I'm selling it this winter and buying something else. Don't have an opinion on the Lawn Boy.

Don't buy either one of those or a John Deere
Find your local Ariens or Snapper dealer. Best mowers you can buy. I would not ever buy a cub cadet w/b mower, if thats what you want then save some money & buy an MTD w/b mower because thats what you are getting with a cub cadet.

Cub Cadet, we've had ours 3 yrs & have never had an ounce of trouble with it, it is an excellent choice, we have several dealers in our neck of the woods, so parts would not be a problem. It is a great piece of equipment. I love using it as does Bob.

Is the baseball ok it should be pretty easy to replace the baseball they are relatively inexpensive. Unless it was signed by babe Ruth in that case your best bet is to find an old blind man with a large dog he will probably have a replacement for it signed by the whole team.
