Probably by the fact that a good person is rare and their death hurts a community. It got started by very young military men returning home dead. (18/19) That's YOUNG, and many years ago the death rate was high for babies - so people were worth more, well you know what I mean.
A bad person dying is sad for the mother - but, well, not for the community, town the bad person robbed, etc. - ya know?

No, if that were true, my dad would have died at a very young age. He died at age 72, the doctor said his heart was like a 40 year old. So maybe he was still young.
I think the saying got started, when a person died at a young age, and it was said to comfort those grieving the loss of a loved one.

No, too many people die young to all be good. I think it started as a way to comfort the bereaved. By the way, Billy Joel's song references it with "so they say."

because they don't have a chance to be bad if they die young and if someone dies they only talk about the good things

Yes, I not only believe it but I have experienced it firsthand. I have witnessed quite a few deaths in my family, and it seems that the people who are nice and really likeable died and those who are miserable and nasty to anyone/everyone are still around. Maybe something about their being nasty to everyone is a preservative, causing them to live longer.

Part of the reason can go to Billy Joel for his 1970s song with that title..

Billy Joel wrote a song under that title. It was about trying to get a Virgin catholic girlfriend to sleep with him.
