Catch-22 by Joseph Heller is a great satire with excellent usage of wordplay.

A Room with a View by E. M. Forster is also a lovely book. It's a light read with nice imagery and plot. Perfect little package in my opinion.

My first thought was to second the Mockingbird vote because it is such a well written story about love, families, race, forgiveness, and faith, but Brooklyness is right, the dialogue is not a model for great English if that is a main reason for reading the book. I would say a modern writer who writes well and about thought provoking topics in English is Barbara Kingsolver. She has a number of novels and several non-fiction essay collections and a poetry collection. She probably writes as well as anybody alive today. Her stories deal with issues all humans need to look at if our planet is to survive, and she brings her characters to life so much so that I feel like they are family or friends, and I think about them, and wonder how they are long after I have finished the novel. She deals with social and political issues and makes them human. She makes me try to be a more compassionate and better person. Hope you enjoy her books. Her essays are politically astute and well researched. Even if you disagree with her politics, you will have to commend her writing abilities. She is a compassionate human ambassador as well as a great writer.

Stargirl had an affect on me. It was really moving. Even though It is a little kids book, it really touches you. You can see the way the characters change, the way they hide and are sort of put in descise. It is a truely beautiful book.

To Kill A Mockingbird. It really is the strongest book I've ever read. It's symbolism is brilliant. It's words are moving. The entire story line is so amazing, it really does move you. These are the books you need to read.

King Fortis the Brave would be a great book for you. It's about a pair of twins that are brought into a magical realm where they are caught in the middle of a battle for control of the land. It's really well written and full of just the right mixture of humor and action.

Mademoiselle Elva,
This is a prehistoric answer: When I was a young teenage boy, circa 1970, I read a book called "Black Like Me" that was written by John Howard Griffin in 1961 [some 28 years before you were born]. It was about a white man who journied to the deep south and disguised himself as a black man at times. He would go somewhere white and then go back black. He wrote of the deep differences in how he was treated. As a white man he was greeted with respect and was welcomed. As a black man he was spit on and attacked and grossly disrespected. This book does more than make you think about your own prejudices, it makes you feel them and forces you to deal with them. It so deeply portrays our wrongfullness in our treatment of people who are different than us that it may possibly change those who read it.
The reality is that it's not just in the deep south, it's also in hip places like California and Seattle, WA. Many things have changed by law but not enough have changed by heart. Good reading!

"To Kill A Mockingbird". It was just so good and interesting, but.....I wouldn't really recommend it if your trying to learn proper English, because they talk very southern and backwoods in it, so until you get use to the lingo it's kind of hard to understand.
