It can be a number of things. You can buy a cheap "code reader" and find out what the problem is, or have a mechanic hook the comp. up to a diagnostic machine.

either the charging system,,or the oil level or the coolant level,,will make the light come on,,what it is doing is telling you that it is low on something,,it was designed to do exactly that,,so it done it's job,,if you will check all the fluid levels,and look at all your instruments,,you will probably find what is making it go on,,if everything checks out OK,,you may have developed a short in the light ,,but this is very doubt full,,these light are pretty dependable,,i hope this help,s.this light may also monitor the fuel level also.

low oil pressure, high water temp, low voltage, and low fuel as far as buing a code reader all you need is a gem-clip. and then count the check engine light flashes. any service book for that car will have the codes and tell you how to use the gem-clip.

You need to check your gages!
If one is reading below normal you may need to look into what is giving you the problem.
Is it a bad sender or is it something more serious?
