The idea is that whenever someone dies in a moment of "terrible rage," a curse may be spawned that affects that place. In the movie, Kayako Saeki had a crush on her teacher (played by Bill Pullman); her husband Takeo killed her and her son Toshio who witnessed the murder (and the family cat, even). Supernatural shenanigans happens and the curse is born, manifesting itself primarily as the ghost of Kayako but also as Toshio (the son) and the cat. The only rules are: you set foot in the house, and you die eventually. No time limit as to when (none of this seven days stuff like that other ghost), no limit as to where, no limit as to how. Just that the curse is going to get you, someday, somehow.

Some time later the Bill Pullman character goes to the Saeki house and finds Toshio, who's actually a ghost at this point. He discovers Kayako's and Takeo's bodies (Takeo had hung himself) and is so freaked out by what happened that he killed himself.

Years later the Williams family moves into the house. The curse kills the wife, the mother-in-law's nurse, the husband (possessing him with the "spirit" of Takeo Saeki momentarily), and the husband's sister.

Some time later, Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) arrives as a replacement for the nurse. She discovers the Williams' elderly mother-in-law, who's gone catatonic from the haunting. The curse kills the old lady.

Anyway...long story short, the curse kills everyone. Karen, in her last visit to the house, enters a sort of "time rift" that allows her to witness what happened years ago with the Bill Pullman character. The movie makes things more interesting and confusing by jumping around in the timeline Tarantino-style, which actually relates to the curse's ability to fudge around with time and space, but that's something that's explored more in the Japanese movies (the "Ju-On" series) that The Grudge is based on.

There's actually some lengthy and elaborate debates and discussions about the nature of The Grudge, as well as how it differs from the original Japanese series of movies--I had a forum about it once but it got hacked and erased. I do have a remnant of it that might help you in understanding the film:

The husband murdered his wife, son, and the cat. So the souls of them become rampage and didn't like living thing dwelling inside the house or even set a foot on it! All the victims in the movie were just good person in wrong place, just like that!
The story itself is unclear, needs a lot of imagination to understand. It's a very bad horror movie I think, and the original movie isn't much different. Not scare me at all.

the movie is about a husband killed his wife after discovering she liked someone else he killed her and drowned the cat and the son in the tub.where after the person who takes care of the lady in the house discovers the little boy and try to find whats wrong wit him.To cut it short the movie is about about the girl trying to lift the curse in the house but soon finds that she can't do anything to stop the curse.

it extremely is a exceedingly far-fetched series of movies. it extremely is ultimate to no longer take it so heavily. the 1st "Highlander" action picture worked as a results of fact it set up a mythology, with a contest between immortals, a series of regulations for their battling, etc. yet with the intention to make sequels, they had to interrupt the regulations of the 1st action picture, with the intention to proceed the story. that's greed for you.
