All of these people who are telling you to just call blacks or whites "people" or by their names are missing the point of your question. There weren't very many black people where I grew up (there were two sisters in my high school who were black and that's it) and I always just went by the term "African-American", as that's what I'd always heard. However, after moving to the South and living among a high population of black people, I quickly learned that most blacks do not like to be called "African-American'' as not all black people have ancestry from Africa. I realize someone came up with this phrase to sound more politically correct, but it's an inaccurate phrase.
Also, there is nothing wrong with saying someone is black or white, like so many people seem to think. It all goes back to how we treat someone. If we treat someone differently because they are a different color, then that is definitely wrong. But, to say someone has black or white skin is stating a fact and those who feel that this is an insult need to evaluate reality and their own prejudices a bit more. I'm not racist and in fact have a black goddaughter even though I'm as white as they come, but facts are facts.

I know what you mean....One of my good friend's is black and she gets offended if I call her african-american because she said she didnt come from Africia so I shouldnt label her as that....But my advice is, I would go with african-american.... It's just out of respect....

Why not just call them "people"? I am not being a smartass, but I would rather just be called a "person", rather than a "white person" when someone is referring to me. Maybe other people feel that way too...
