If you look at the edge of paper under a microscope, you will see it isn't as smooth it looks. The paper's edge is actually small ridges and valleys, like a saw. This is because of the way paper is made: overlapping plant fibres, not one big sheet.

This combined with the quick movement of running along your hand or finger will cause the saw-like edge to cut through your skin. It hurts so much because your hand has thousands of nerve endings to help with touch. The hands, the mouth, and the genitals have the largest amount of nerve endings on the body, so getting a cut in any of these areas is extremely painful.

Did you know that it hurts so bad to have paper cut because of the fact that you don't bleed as much as you do with a regular cut? Your body can't flush the wound so the germs are in there and therefore the pain doesn't go anywhere either. So I guess that means if all you get is a paper cut.. slice it a little more and maybe it will feel better.. I know I can't say I have tried it myself though.

The edge of a piece of paper isn't smooth at all. On a microscopic level its edge is jagged and serrated like a saw or bread knife. These paper "teeth" somtimes fit into the microscopic ridges on your skin (you can feel this if you slowly drag a the edge of a piece of paper over your skin). If the paper moves across the skin just right, then the microscopic paper "teeth" will hook into the skin and actually rip the skin off, which is why paper cuts hurt so much. So really it should be called a "paper tear" since the skin is not cut, but torn.

Yes, many times with copying paper! It really smarts too- makes a sharp cut. A cut with a piece of paper not only parts the flesh, but it also damages the skin on either side of the wound because of the paper's rough and fibrous surface.

Yes, I've had paper cuts before. Most of the time they're a major annoyance and they don't really hurt that much. One time, though, I got one on my tongue after licking an envelope and then I was stupid enough to eat some salt and vinegar chips. Major pain! Hopefully, nothing like that has happened since.

Yes, they are common and painful. The sharp edge of a piece of paper is just like a knife. It can pierce the skin and even bleed. Not all paper is like that. It has to do, I guess, with the way the paper is manufactured.

I don't know about that, maybe the paper is too sharp along the edge. I have been cut umpteen times, sometimes I don't even know until I wash my hands and felt the stinging pain. It's not only pain, it is itchy as well.

i think its because the edge is a little sharp so it gives you paper cuts.

i guess you pull away very fast and that razor cut side paper acts like a saw going fast one way to cut.
