There is a history of Alzheimer's disease in my family. What (if anything) should I be doing to prevent myself from getting it?

First you should always have a yearly check up. Stop drinking all alochol, exercise, take Omega 3 oils, vitamins, and most important, Ask this question to the Alzheimers Organization and read their information they put out.

You need to join an Alzheirmers group if you need more infor. This decease is a hard problem.

Always check with a profession in the field.

I asked the doctor in charge of the Alzheimer's study my dad is in that very question. Supposedly with a parent with AD my chances go to 50% for getting it.
He told me the 50% figure is only accurate if I live to be 100. Eat healthy, take fish oil, keep my mind & body active--that's what he suggested.

Mental gymnastics has been shown to help delay onset of Alzheimer's, particularly exercises involving problem-solving and mathematics. Word games are also effective. If you smoke ... stop; it seems to speed the onset of Alzheimer's. Make sure your diet includes lots of antioxidants since free radicals seem to contribute to Alzheimer's, as does a diet high in fats. General physical development seems to greatly decrease your chances of early Alzheimer's.
