A summons is a court notice saying that a hearing has been scheduled and that you are a party of interest.
If you received a summons from the court to appear, you may want to think strongly about appearing. You may be being asked to appear as a witness, or because you are being sued, or for some other reason.
If the summons names you as a defendant, you may also want to think about consulting an attorney (unless it's small claims court).

No matter if it is for an offense you may have incurred, or you to be a witness for a case, the summons is a legal requirement for you to be at that court on the day and time stated in that summons. If you did not appear as required, you would be held in contempt of court and could be arrested and put in jail as a result.

I would guess that summons means you have to go court. It depends what degree of probelms you could be facing though. There are different levels of the court system. I would think you might end up in front of a judge.
Note: Im not an expert on this though.
Here's some links that will help you though:

What kind of summons? Is it as a defendant? Witness? or complainant? There two type of summons: 1) Testipicandum (to appear in court) 2) Duces Tecum (To present a document, as evidence). Are you aware of any complaint (ie. credit cards, traffic violation) filed against you? Or have witness any incident where the police took your name and address that would be a ground for this summons? clarify, please.

it means that you have to show up to court. A summons means that you have to be present on that certain day or receive the punishment which could be a postponement to a later date,or a fine,or even a contempt of court (jail time). depending on what the summons was concerning.

You should have been given a paper with the summons that says why you have been summoned. If you don't appear they will issue a bench warrant and someone from the Sherriff's department will come get you and bring you in. I would suggest showing up.

What ever it is it means that you have to go to the court. If it isn't stated on the summons, call the courthouse and find out what it is for.

while post o fthese people mean well, there seems ro be confusion. No, you are not a witness, there is some type of proceeding against you. Tes, it might be as simple as a ticket, as you thought. You can also ask for an adjournment if you find while in court that you need more time
