What is wrong with aborting a child who you know will be born with Tay-Sachs disease?

It is one of the worst genetic disorders, here is a fact sheet on it:

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/taysachs/taysachs.htm

Now, if you knew a child were going to be born with this disease... would you abort it and spare it and yourself the horrible pain and misery of dealing with an uncurable horrible disease? If you believe that is morally wrong, then tell me please what is morally right about allowing someone to suffer continuously from something they cannot recover? Why would you judge someone who wanted to spare her child and family this horrible ordeal?

That's a tough question. I know I wouldn't hold it against someone when its done for mercy, rather than the all too common "inconvenience".

My nephew and his wife just went through a similar event. Their baby was thought to have a defect b/c of a missing chromosome, kind of like Downs Syn.but a different chrom. They had tests and prayed over it. The baby would have a deformed head and hands, probably go blind and deaf and would never be able to live with support and most die in their 1st yr. They decided to keep it. The 7lb boy was born this wk and he is ok. His lungs are a little under developed but not bad enough for lung support! Hallelujah! I read about some of the kids living to be 4,10.14,&21 in college. These parents were so blessed that they didn't kill their babyand. In their statements and personal stories they all told about how the love grew in the family(the child brought love and patience into the home) and how things and ppl were not taken for granted anymore. Even the ones who had thier babies for only days or wks felt they had made the best decision! I hope that if it is you expecting baby with potential problems that you pray and pray. That baby can be changed in the womb if it is God's will I will pray also for the situation.Best wishes!

No, I would not abort a baby who had this. I wouldn't have an abortion, period. Medicine is NOT an exact science. I don't care what a group of specialists told me, if I aborted a baby because I was told he would be ill, live a short life, and die a horrible painful death, I'd STILL spend every waking minute of the remainder of my days asking, "What if..." What if that Tay Sachs baby was given a chance at life, only to find that the doctors were WRONG (as they many times are) and grew up to find the cure for AIDS. Imagine if he'd been aborted. Tsk tsk.

Abortion is solely your choice, regardless of the reasons. Be thankful you have that right.
