I am not sure what you are trying to do. Are you downloading something and you want your PC to go to sleep? That you can't.
DSL and Cable are always on connection. If you are not downloading anything or working on it, then it shouldn't matter whether the PC goes to sleep or not. If it doesn't connect then there must be something else wrong with it.

Put a router between the PC and the DSL modem. The router will keep the DSL line live.

As suggested before, having a router between your computer and the modem may help, but If you put your computer into standby suspended mode, it will likely disconnect the current session that you have in AIM anyway. I don't really see the point of having AIM open when your computer isn't in use. Though it may be convenient, it would only take a few seconds to log back in

you can leave it on, but your DSL connection may stop working and lock up. well, i accidently forgot to turn off my DSL when i put the computerr in sleep mode, and the next morning, my DSL wouldn't work, i mean, it wouldn't load any web pages. even restarting the DSL didn't work. i had to turn the DSL off and restart the computer. may be an easier way, but that was what i had to do.

Even if you put your computer to sleep your DSL will always be on. Now if you are looking at downloading while you are away that is a different story. On that one you would need to set your computer not to hibernate so that your downloading program would keep on working while you are away from it.
