Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, made winter when she caused all the plants to stop growing after Hades abducted her daughter, Persephone. When they worked out a deal that Persephone could return for 9 months a year, spring came back. Winter returns every year when Persephone goes back to the underworld.

Nature myths try to explain the creation of the world, the animals, the movements or heavenly bodies physical forces, the weather, and other natural phenomena. An example of a nature myth is the story of Proserpine which attempts to explain the four seasons.

Pluto is in love with Proserpine and abducted her. [Summer]. Proserpine is living in the Underworld with her father. [Winter] Her mother, Ceres ( Goddess of Agriculture) searches for for daughter. [Fall] and [Spring] when she finds her.

It's all borrowing the girl.
