a cd burner hardware allows you to store averagely 700MB to 750MB of data to a disc, or so-called compact disc. You may store up to 800MB but you need to purchase the necessary media.
a cd burning software we called, fundamentally allows you to perform the task. You need to install it into your system in order for you to carry out the burning process.
take note there are 2 types of discs, 1 is called CDR (Readable), another is called CDRW (Re-writable).
the 1st one allow you to burn your data into the disc for once only. The other type allows you to burn your data into the disc for more than once.

A CD recorder, CD writer or CD burner is a compact disc drive that can be used to produce discs readable in other CD-ROM drives and audio CD players. The process is often referred to as "burning". A small laser is used and the process does generate a small amount of heat, hence the term. The CD burner is hardware and you will need software to complete the process of writing to your CD. There are several popular CD Burning software available. Some examples are Nero, Roxio, and Easy Media Creator.

CD burner software is the program that runs in your computer like MS Word, the hardware is any thing that helps you use the software you run in your computer. The cd burner hardware would be the actual cd burner where the cd will be placed.

The burner is like a CD rom but copies files and songs to a CD/ the equipment is called a rewriteable CD ROM. I use Nero burning software and have little trouble with it. Only when I copy more than one session on a disk. Erasable disks are not that good, need a special part of Nero called IN CD which only works on Erasable disks and must be installed to read them after you copy stuff to them.
