Ok - here's the deal-

My bestfriend's cousin has been going through some health problems lately, and has been suffering serious depression. She has let her home go to the extreme extent, and I know it bothers her. She has tried to clean and organize many times, and it somehow piles up on her again.

She takes in stray cats, and has an indoor dog. The cats have made such a mess of her home. Some use the litter box and other go ALL over the floor, on the couch, kitchen counter, even the stove! :*( She loves the cats and will not get rid of them.

Her floor is so soiled, the beige carpet is now med-dark brown with filth. The cats walk on this, get it on there paws and walk all over the counters and leave nasty paw prints, everywhere. Her dog gets into the trash and spreads it all over. Her cats urinate and poo all over her place, on bags and boxes. She is in a rut, and can't seem to keep everything clean.

Any advice, how to you clean this extreme filth?

Then look up animal hoarding
I'd imagine there could be flea and insect problems too
Only let her keep one pet that is potty trained (rest to animal shelter)
Maybe get a dumpster and ditch most of it
This is a mental health issue - it will probably not be resolved easily. It's like OCD
It will take cleaning plus mental health eval
Good luck and thanks for caring

Lots of lysol, and a degreaser of somekind some good brands are grease lightning or purple power if you can find those, Clorox is good, Febreeze to take away the odor and lots of it...many grocery stores have carpet cleaners that you can rent and they work really good for the carpet and the have stuff you can buy to pour in them to use to clean the carpet but if you can find the degreaser product then it works just as well if not better and is much cheaper, and use clorox or lysol to clean the counters and spray the house down with febreeze. I hope this helps.

Ugh. There is no saving that kind of mess. You have to rip out the carpets because they will always smell at this point. Get it down to the bare concrete (floors) and scrub the floors.

Send the pets to better homes, first of all. If she can't care for herself, then she can't care for animals. Call the animal pet shelter and ask for help if she's having trouble letting go of the pets.

Is she agreeable to cleaning? Make sure you get her blessing, so that you can clean and it remains clean. She needs medication too!

This is a huge problem starting with her. You are wasting time if she wont let go of the pets. Bleach, rip out the carpet then put KILZ down before putting anything over the floors. It can't be accomplished with the pets still in the home...
Good Luck!

ok-- i cleaned up a relatives house like this after she died. It is not easy but it can be done. Your friend will have to go somewhere else for a while if you do it, but there are disaster cleaning companies who can do it quicker.

carpets and pads will have to be ripped out and replaced., furniture that is fabric is probably a lost cause haul it to the dump. wood, glass, metal, and tile
linoleum,vinyl,etc.. can be cleaned with bleach, lots and lots of bleach.. wear a respirator, at all times or you may pass out from the fumes. drapes can be dry cleaned, but it's probably better to get new ones.
it's a lot of work.. but it can be done.

First thing you need to do is get rid of the animals. Then you will have to replace the carpet and furniture and bleach everything else. Untill you get rid of the animals than your waisting your time
