I needed to use the restroom in the Dollar Tree in Lodi, NJ. I have used it many times before, leaving my purse and jacket with the person accompanying me to the store.Today, I was abruptly stopped and I DO mean abruptly, and harshly by the African American manager I never saw before. Not only was she nasty and rude, but she actually yelled at me in front of a store full of customers for trying to use the restroom.I had $37 worth of items that I had to wait on line to check out, then walk down the block to the Chinese Restaurant where they very nicely allowed me to use the restroom.Had the tables been turned..she would have been all over me like white on rice using the race card, well now *I'm* using the race card and saying if I were a white manager talking like that to her, she would have Al Sharpton at the store yelling "racism". This is a very nasty woman who has no regard for customers feelings. Tomorrow I will speak to her supervisor, she will NOT get away with this.

All restaurants require to have public restroom by law. The dollar stores don't. Most those small stores have their restroom at the back of the store where only employees are allowed.
For you, you been there before many times and you are a good customer, so it shouldn't be a problem.
For new manager, she doesn't know you ; she sees white lady running into "Employee's Only" area for no reason without permission..
I see ,on your question, that you never asked her if you can use their restroom. If you did, she might have been a lot nicer
I agree that manager should handle this a lot better, but that sometimes happen when people have to act very fast.
I bet if you go there next time, and she knows you little better, she will treat you right. Who know you might find her to be a very nice person as you are.

I recommend dealing with things on a human level before you immediately put up divisions and start using "the race card"
Maybe she is new, maybe she is trying to stretch her "managerial muscle"
How she treated you was wrong but you don't know that she wouldn't treat an African American customer the same way.
Try not to jump to conclusions...there are many explanations for her behavior other than racism. If a white manager had treated you that way what would you have as an explanation?
Maybe someone died, they had a migraine, they are a rude person...whatever.
I think you should report her to another manager there...but jumping to the "race card" right off the bat makes you a racist more than her.
Good Luck.

Nor should she. I agree with you completely. You have been allowed to use the restroom before so why not today? Also she handled you unprofessionally, they all think they can get away with this kinds of behaviour.
On the other hand her job probably sucks. She is probably under-appreciated and under paid to boot. ( still not an excuse). I am pointing out another way this can be viewed.
The way I would handle this is by making a simple enquiry to the manager asking if the bathrooms are no longer in use and why? That way you don't blow up ( like you kinda did here ) and make an *** out of yourself. Then share your experience.

that's hardship-unfastened courtesy for a guy or woman who needs to apply the restroom to purchase an merchandise or partake of the provider presented there. some companies are actually not required with the aid of regulation or ordinance to grant a public restroom; and as a result do not accomplish that. by using fact offering public get admission to to aspects of a employer which would be seen inner maximum do bring about coverage themes and wellness themes for the employer, there are expenses in touch. I somewhat have labored in retail situations the place there has and has not been public get admission to into the restrooms and the two determination could be a blessing or a curse. that's a blessing to be able to grant get admission to to the purchasers for his or her convenience. it rather is not a blessing for the staff who has to handle the cleanliness of the section or the certainty that many products get stolen with the aid of utilising the restroom. ability purchasers can get dissatisfied in the event that they are not given get admission to to a restroom, yet maximum unquestionably everyone seems to be expertise and maximum companies may be able to indicate different centers interior a reasonable distance for the guy wanting to apply bathing room centers. i could be very confident that lots of people who whinge approximately public get admission to to the restroom could replace into directly extra expertise whilst they had to accomplish a job which coated cleansing a public get admission to facility. So buying a least a small merchandise will help to offset all of those issues.

Write a letter to Dollar Tree's home office direct the letter to Customer Service. Describe the way you were treated and mention that at other times you were allowed to use the restroom. Also, mention that you were a customer with merchandise to purchase and that you will reconsider using their store again. No one should be treated badly.

If it's an employee restroom that's located in the back warehouse of their store, they aren't supposed to let anyone back there. You should have gone to the bathroom beforehand. I doubt this had anything to do with race since she was probably just doing her job and not letting customers use an employee bathroom in the back warehouse of the store. It's actually considered trespassing if you weren't supposed to be back there. You're lucky she didn't call the cops on you.

The Dollar Tree next to my house does not have a public bathroom and clearly displays that fact. As far as I am aware this is a company-wide policy and their bathrooms are located past where customers are allowed to go. if so, she was 100% correct in what she did.

Was the problem that you couldn't use the bathroom or that a black person told you that you couldn't?

Did you ask to use the restroom this time, or did you just assume you could use it?
If you didn't ask first, how was she to know that you had been allowed in there before?
Granted, she didn't need to let everyone in the store know about the problem, but she may have thought you were a shoplifter.

why would you assume that race had anything to do with it? did she say something about it? perhaps she was just an unhappy or rude person, regardless of her race.

you should definitely complain about it if you felt you were treated unfairly, but before you play the "race card" make sure you have proof that was the reason.
