I would add that the child in the womb isn't just "future life," but actual present life as well. See:

1. At what point do you consider a microscopic egg and sperm future life? I believe that the abortion of a viable fetus is murder, but anything earlier than that is just living tissue. A little bit of tissue is not a person and does not feel pain or suffering.
2. You're right: saying you didn't mean to get pregnant should not be an excuse. However, some of the women who do get pregnant are not women that should be bringing children into the world; for example, those who are drug addicts or are so impoverished they can't even feed themselves. You'd do better to ask why celibacy isn't being promoted. Also, think of rape victims: who would want to carry a rapist's fetus?
For the most part, I believe that aborted fetuses weren't meant to live in the first place because their mothers weren't people who should be having kids anyway. Some of these women are just young and one day will be great moms, but in most cases, are not the mom type for whatever reason. If these fetuses had been carried to term, what kind of life would they be living now?

Abortion does kill the baby, but many women will have an abortion whether it is legal or not. Legalised abortion provides a hygienic, relatively much safer (for the mother) environment that these abortions will take place. The death rate (death of women) in illegal "back street" abortions is very high; there are also awful infections. Legalised abortion is necessary as the mother's life is more precious than the unborn child, imho.
To address point two, some women are raped and some girls conceive before they can give consent. This is not "saying they didn't mean to get pregnant": this is rape.

Procedurally, abortion is legal because no legislature has passed legislation banning it that has not been challenged in court, or as in Rowe v. Wade, the court struck down such attempts at that legislation based on the arguments as they pertained to the Constitution.
Economically, it is legal most likely because there is a demand for abortion, quite simply. Where there is a demand, someone will be willing to supply, legally or otherwise.
Morally, well, to speak morally is to speak subjectively; as much as people seem to adhere to a concept of absolute morality, no one can agree on what the absolute morals are.
Both of your contentions are facts to you but they're not universally agreed to be so by everyone. I would say life is a phenomena or a process as opposed to a right, because rights are given. This comes back to the fact that, as much as one would like to infuse God into the fabric of law, the First Amendment of the Constitution does not allow this.
I would argue also that the sole purpose of sex is not strictly impregnation: it isn't. Sex is important in increasing love, intimacy, understanding, and fun between two people; this in turn benefits the family and social groups. Just like how the purpose for getting in a car and driving is not solely to go somewhere else, the purpose might just be to leave the house for a while...

legalities are decided by laws. the laws are interpreted and ruled upon by the courts after arguments on both sides. the supreme court has the final word. they have ruled abortions legal in ceratin situations. that is the law. that is what is legal. morality and religion are not part of the issue for the courts legal ruling. that is for god and the churches to decide.
abortion is not a form of birth control. it is a medical procedure to be used in certain situations as set forth in the laws of the land and as ruled by the courts by the elected or apointed judges. abuse of this right is not construed as ethical or moral but happens anyway.
if sex is only for new life, people could only copulate when female is fertile. that is one day each month. is that really what you want for our culture? let god deal with the problem and go count how many angels can sit on the head of a pin or something.it is not your business to decide. obey the law or change the law

The constitution guarantees life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, etc, to PERSONS. A fetus is not a person legally, though morally there is not much difference between a fetus one day before birth and a baby one day old. This is the position of pro-choice.
My response is, "30 minutes after the baby has been born, and it does not yet have a name and the birth has not as yet been registered, then the baby is still not yet a PERSON. Is it LEGALLY correct for the mother or father to kill the baby if s/he so desire?"

You make a couple of pretty good points. However, many people disagree with your logic, for many reasons. The law is a listing of what is and isn't allowed for everybody, regardless of beliefs or personal views. There's plenty of things that are legal, but just aren't right, and many things that are illegal for (I think) no good reason. Unless everybody shares the same views on what's right or wrong, we can't have laws that mesh with our views 100%. That's why abortion, or any other controversial thing, is legal.
The best way to use your points to change society's opinion about something like abortion is not by trying to use them to outlaw abortion, but by sharing your views with abortion supporters, learning their views, and calmly and rationally discussing the matter.

I agree. but I am not sure we can legistate morality.
People think birth control and contraception is the same. Birth control means there has been a conception and it is exterminated. Contrception.......means preventing the joining of a sperm and a egg. To me the moment they join it is human.
As an X nurse I have never met someone who had an abortion who actually got over it emotionally. Even the guys grieve the loss of chilren they "got rid of" years ago. I know an older guy who when his gf got pregnent just out of high school. he gave her money to have an abortion. That kid would be over 30 years old now....and my friend who just has girls still grieves that child that he "got rid of" He says......that might of been the son he always wanted.
Do you really think that the only reason for sex is for procreation?
What happened to the enjoyment part?

Well...for number 2 sex isn't really only to have kids anymore, humans have eveolved wayyy past that now, do you really think, from the moment we are born that we are trying to reproduce? It isn't natural instict anymore man.
Sometimes, a fetus is going to be born into a broken family, given no chance for sucess, and doomed to live a hard life, isn't it wrong to force the baby into that world?

1. I consider it a right someone has when they're born.
2. Accidents happen. And what if a woman gets raped, huh? You'd really force that poor woman to raise a child that is a part of that monster?
