I just found out that the state of Wisconsin is suing me for worthless checks under the amount of $2500. This is my first time offense. I dont even have any parking tickets. Does anyone know how hard they are on people in this situation?

Well according to Wisconsin penal code(Wis. Stat. § 943.24 )
Issuing worthless check is a "Class A misdemeanor":
"
943.24. Issue of worthless check.
(1) Whoever issues any check or other order for the payment of not more than 2,500 which, at the time of issuance, he or she intends shall not be paid is guilty of a Class A misdemeanor.
"

The punishment for Class A Misdemeanor is "10,000 or imprisonment not to exceed 9 months, or both."(Wis. Stat. § 939.51)

So the WORST that can happen to you is 9 month of jail. However given clean record you will probably get off with fines and community service.
Get a good lawyer just in case though.

This is what you'll need to do. Call up the DA's office and see if they will drop the charges if you pay the amount of the worthless check you wrote. Most DA's will since worthless check is not worth spending considerable time to chase. Plus, it's pretty sad when Wal-mart and other big retailers uses the DA as their personal collection agency without having to pay them a percentage.

If you have over $2500, they will probably not be to lenient and especially if they can prove that you wrote them.
