I mean the power to completely destroy or oblterate any given target anywhere on this planet at any time. And could/would/should we be taken to task for doing so?

In fact, our nation has the best strategic positioned military in the entire world. Our nuclear arsenal, combined with our positioning has the capability to pummel pretty much any given enemy into the "stone age". Winning a war is not a problem for our military. The problem is always in "winning the peace" and rebuilding that which we have demolished.

As for the second part of this inquiry, no. I don't wish to see any target bombarded with the most advanced or even the most outdated barbaric arsenal in history. War is always bad, and they are always fought for money (as one very intelligent man once said, I forget who).

We certainly do have that capability, given a few hours lead time. If the President said, "destroy this target" we could do it in 8 hrs or less. Anything from a building to a city.

As for whether we should destroy the target, that depends on the target. If it was an elementary school, yeah, probably a bad idea. But if it was a terrorist training camp, yeah, I think we should, would, and have done it.

During the height of the cold war it was said the we could destroy Russia 25 times and they could destroy us 95 times. Lets hope it never comes that a leader of the U.S. gets so far out of whack that they use these terrible weapons ever again. What we did to Japan was an atrocity, it did save lives in the long run but it killed and is killing millions of Japanese the destruction is still going on with the aftermath of the nuclear explosions.

Well, America does have a large nuclear arsenal..but if we're talking WMD, hell, Britain, France, China, Israel, Russia, India, Pakistan and possibly Iran..all could potentially wipe out a country many times their size

For example, lets take Britains arsenal. Over 50 warheads are kept active at one time, with hundreds in stockpiles. Imagine Americas 50 most important cities, vaporised. Imagine 50 of the worlds most important cities, Vaporised. And thats just us Limeys, imagien if everyone got involved!

We DO have the power. The question is: Should we use it? The Iranians sure will when they get it.
We've gone 60 years without using it. Hopefully, it will never be used again. But then - when you're dealing with people who don't care if they live or die and are waiting for those 72 virgins - you really can't predict anything, can you?
At least the Cold War had "rules."

The USA (and a few other countries) could destroy any given target, any time. Actually there are enough nukes to destroy our whole planet a few times so...

Having power is not a bad thing, missusing it is.

No we do not have that power but we are spending way too much money to get it. And we should not be able to bomb anywhere at anytime. We attack other nations for just such a thing.
