as your period approaches make sure you do some abdominal and keegel exercises. . Cramps are caused by the uterine muscles flexing and contracting and like every other muscle needs to be kept in condition and like all other muscles needs prep work before extended use. During the actual cramping day/days be sure you remain as physically active as you can to keep those muscles motivated.
Also you will find that having sex ( if you are already sexually active ) or masturbating will help because it forces the uterine muscles to stretch and relax.
Taking a pain reliever will help with what's left over.

Take ibuprofen (advil, motrin) or naproxen (aleve) twice a day 2 days before you expect to get your period, then the day of, take 2 in the morning and then again as *soon* as you feel the least bit of crampage coming on. You can also do this with midol, but for me, stronger stuff like Aleve works best.

Mild exercise like walking helps me. A heating pad helps a little too. Nothing seems to really help a lot. These are just a few little things to do to ease the discomfort.
