What's the best way to get from Philly to Providence on Sunday night starting aroudn 5 pm? Mapquest sends me up 95 right by NYC which seems to me to be a likely bottleneck. Hope someone has another recommendation. Thanks!

I like cutting up to Tappen Zee as well to avoid bridge traffic if I think there'll be lots. You can always connect back to 95 a little afterwards. 95 through most of CT will be the "fastest", though I use that term loosely as there'll probably be more cars than lanes, if you know what I mean.

That's the most direct way I know of to Providence unfortunately. When I drive north to Boston I take the Garden State Parkway over the Tappan Zee Bridge to 84 in Connecticut but that goes way north of Providence, and still has the potential for lots of traffic.

The train is always fun or Southwest Airlines flies that route as well, if that's an option...

You're screwed...

Everyone here has mentioned something that works sometimes, but I do that drive every week...it just can't be fooled...somehow, you always lose unless you leave right at noon (and I mean RIGHT at noon, not 20 minutes later) or after 7 PM...

You can take Amtrak. It runs right from Philly to Providence. Or you can try Soutwest. They fly into Providence.

95 IS THE SHORTEST AND BEST WAY, BUT THE TIME YOU ARE LEAVING IS TERRIBLE. YOU'LL BE HITTING ALL THE HOMEBOUND TRAFFIC. YOU SHOULD GO THRU N.Y. AT AROUND 3AM. THERE WILL BE TRAFFIC BUT NOTHING LIKE 5PM.
