Until recently, Microsoft business model was desktop applications. There main source of revenue came from software programs like Windows XP, Microsoft Office, Windows .NET Framework, Windows Virtual Server,...etc.. While Microsoft worked on desktop software, companies like Google and Yahoo! concentrated on online applications. For example, Google came out with Gmail, Google Calendar and Writely, an online word processor. Yahoo! came out with Yahoo! Mail, My Web, del.icio.us and Flickr. Applications that were traditionally seen on a desktop were making their way on to the Internet. Both Google and Yahoo! main source of revenue comes from placing ads on their websites. Microsoft realized that they missed the train, they failed to notice that the Internet is the biggest source of profit. So, Microsoft moved quickly to catch up to Google and Yahoo!. They called their brand of online applications Windows Live. For example, Windows Live Mail, Microsoft Office Live, Live Search, ...etc.

It's the newest gimmick from Microsoft to get you hooked on their programs. There is Live Desktop which is like Outlook, Live Messenger, which is am IM, Live Mail which is a revamped Hotmail that looks totally like Outlook. Overall it's not bad. I liked it better than hotmail, but Yahoo mail is much better. The calendar is awesome in Yahoo.
