I've always found building your own (which is not difficult) the cheapest option cos you always have a monitor / keyboard / mouse / hard drive and such so you only need a motherboard chip and memory, and a case you don't like the old one. Try ebuyer vgood for that sort of thing.

the answer is dell, regardless of your unfounded predjudices. Theyre the ikea of computers. Hp, emachines, compaq, sony, acer, etc are either very expensive, or horribly quality.
but the real answer is custom built. any of your local nerds can do it. Its much cheaper and you can use better parts.

Mac laptops... I got one for Christmas and I will never go back to windows. It's also runs windows now... The MacBook runs for around $1,099!
