Depending upon where exactly you live some of the towns (in Suffolk County at least) have composting facilities that will accept brush and branches, check with your town or local parks or waste management facility to see if they have such a program & if so what their requirements are on the size of the wood. Some towns require that you be a resident of that town in order to drop stuff off at these facilities and others may accept non residents with a fee.
Example: Town of Brookhaven Suffolk County:
Landfill / Recycling Facility
Horseblock Road Yaphank
631-451-6222
Hours
(for residential drop-off)
Monday - Friday
7 a.m. - 4 p.m
Saturday 8 a.m. - noon
This is the "dump".
There's also a town composting facility:
Manorville Compost Site
Papermill Road
Manorville
Hours
Monday - Friday
7 a.m. - 3 p.m.
According to Brookhaven's website they accept "Loose brush, large branches, logs and stumps will not be collected but can be delivered to the landfill at no fee." But again this probably depends upon residency. So check with your local waste management dept. or similar agency. Maybe to minimize what you have to cart off as someone else suggested, you can always chop it up into manageable logs and set aside the curb with a sign, "Free Firewood", then cart off whatever is left. Also, consider contacting your local boy or girl scout (or similar) camp and see if they'd like a donation of firewood.

You could place an ad in your local newspaper, "Free firewood". This time of year a lot of ppl are stocking up for winter.

Or, you could call some logging companies and lumber factories. Many will glady accept the wood. Some may even pay you.

Burn it in your fireplace, you already killed the tree. Why not get some use out of the remains.
