Depends on what you are used to live with. I think Japan would be a wonderful country to live in for a year or three, but no more than that. Working environment in Japan is very regimented (and not only the working environment, the education system too), Japanese values toward 'success' and recruitment for high positions in companies also disagrees with beliefs in my equal-opportunity, not to mention the strong social expectations with moving up the career ladder and marriage. If you look 'gaijin' (eg. blue eyes, blonde hair), you also find yourself difficult to be 'one of the guys' and even with Japan opening their country more, you don't find a lot of foreigners outside of Tokyo. You may also find it interesting that Japanese living outside Japan is also retaining the social barrier between the high-class Japanese and middle-class Japanese (ie. Middle-class Japanese wives are expected to pay respect, or at least give a greeting to upper-class Japanese wives at meets/festivals, ditto for the husbands.)

You also have to start getting used to living with earthquakes (or tremors, for the most part).

Don't get me wrong, I can sing poetries about Japanese culture, Japanese people and why Japan is better than other countries in the world, but for my beliefs and lifestyle, Japan is a country for holidays or visits, not for living my whole life. I also want my children to dare be different.

Everyone I've spoken to who has spent time in Japan tells me that they are very civil, but do not warm up to Westerners. They are still a very closed society socially. And the cost of living is very high.

I lived there for two years. Yeah, it was cool but you will get homesick.

as long as they don't bind your feet (or is that China?) or shave your head for your beliefs, I guess it's cool.
