We use an ultrasonic in the trade this sends vibrations through soapy warm water to clean diamond and other jewellery.
At home you could use a chamois leather cloth alchol, metho.
Small cheap ultrasonics are available. The G.I.A. Gemological Institute of America has a great web site www.gia.edu you could see what is available

Anything that would harm a diamond would first harm your hand. If you wouldn't put your hand into the cleaner, don't put your diamond in there, either.

No. But it can harm the gold tongs holding the diamond. Clean with soapy water, and rinse with clear water. Use a toothbrush if necessary.

Physical hardness does not grant immunity from other forms of harm. Anything that will affect carbon will affect a diamond.

No. Dish detergent and water should work well for cleaning. If you have managed to spill something like tar or paint on a diamond, you can use gasoline (I like Coleman stove fuel for this purpose -- it does not have a bad odor) or alcohol or acetone.

you wont manage to scratch the diamond with any physical cleaners (like sandpaper). i dont know about acidic or basic solutions though, as diamond might not be acid resistant (i think it is though, as its a nonpolar substance).
