There wasn't much available in 1906 and earlier, reason you had such huge families.

1. Abstinence.
2. Coitus interruptus.
3. It was believed that douching after copulation would decrease/prevent pregnancies, usually with things like: warm soapy water, vinegar, soda water, wine etc.
4. More practical approaches used small insertions of sea sponge soaked in either vinegar, honey or oil, inserted as far up as possible to form a barrier - hopefully an impenetrable one.
5. Condoms existed but didn't fit well and were considered expensive - they were made from intestines most commonly pork, sometimes lamb.The earliest extent one dates from about 1660 and is a fish gut. (Actually the premise behind wearing a condom was not to prevent conception but rather to protect the man from std's).

Lack of sex. 100 yrs ago people worked hard and long and didn't shower daily. People had a lot of children, but they did not all live. I think people from 100 yrs ago would be amazed how freely it is discussed today.
